Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Hymns in praise of the Virgin Mary. Schubert composed the Latin "Stabat Mater", D 175, between the 4th and 6th April 1815, probably without any specific commission. The text had been appointed by Pope Benedict XIII in 1727 for use at the Feast of the "Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary" on the 15th September. Schubert set to music only the first four of the Stabat Mater's 20 verses, but each verse is repeated with a concluding coda.

Le texte avait été nommé par le pape Benoît XIII en 1727 pour une utilisation à la fête de la "Sept Douleurs de la Vierge Marie" le 15 Septembre. Schubert mis en musique que les quatre vingt versets du Stabat Mater d'abord, mais chaque verset est répété avec une coda finale.
