Tertis Sonata composed by Jordi Cervello. For viola and piano. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau. BO.B.3734. I composed this sonata as a commission from my friend Abili Fort. Tertis Sonata is a work in three movements which, in spite of its free formal structure, follows the traditional sonata form. the first and third movements are fast and the middle movement is lyrical. The first movement, Allegro burlesco, is rhythmic with a free spirit. The movement opens with a subtle introduction for the piano, which, like the rest of the first movement with the exception of a brief cadenza for the viola and a rather mysterious passage, is written in 2. 4 time. Andante sostenuto, the second movement, opens with the viola playing a low song-like solo sotto voce. Later the piano enters with slow and gently harmonies which support the nostalgic song of the viola. The third movement, Allegretto-Allegro is the most complex and varied of the three, both technically and expressively. This movement begins with an ironic cadenza for the viola which ends with a chromatic Lento reaching down to the lowest C of the instrument. This is followed by an Allegretto which connects to an energetic and passionate Allegro, which also has a certain romanticism. Tertis Sonata is an homage to Lionel Tertis. 1876-1975. who was one of the first great viola soloists. Born in Britain he was also a brilliant professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London.

Tertis Sonata est une œuvre en trois mouvements qui, en dépit de sa structure formelle libre, suit la forme sonate traditionnelle. les premier et troisième mouvements sont rapides et le mouvement central est lyrique. Le premier mouvement, Allegro burlesco, est rythmique avec un esprit libre. Le mouvement s'ouvre sur une introduction subtile pour le piano, qui, comme le reste du premier mouvement, à l'exception d'une brève cadence pour l'alto et un passage assez mystérieux, est écrit dans 2. 4 temps. Andante sostenuto, le deuxième mouvement, s'ouvre avec l'alto jouant un faible sotto voce solo de la chanson comme. Plus tard, le piano entre des harmonies lentes et en douceur qui soutiennent la chanson nostalgique de l'alto. Le troisième mouvement, Allegretto-Allegro est le plus complexe et variée des trois, à la fois techniquement et expressivement. Ce mouvement commence par une cadence ironique pour l'alto qui se termine par un Lento chromatique descendant au plus bas C de l'instrument. Il est suivi par un Allegretto qui se connecte à un Allegro énergique et passionnée, qui dispose également d'un certain romantisme. Tertis Sonata est un hommage à Lionel Tertis. 1876-1975. qui fut l'un des premiers grands solistes de l'alto. Né en Grande-Bretagne il était aussi un brillant professeur à la Royal Academy of Music de Londres.
