This new edition is based on all the sources dateable to the composer's lifetime, supplemented by significant information taken from early reprints, with a minimum of editorial intervention modelled on Beethoven's contemporary practice. As well as new information regarding articulation, phrasing and dynamic markings, the edition presents new research regarding variants of the musical text, and offers alternative readings in places where Beethoven's definite intention is not entirely clear. This is intended as an incentive for the player to explore and analyse this material, the final playing version of which is by no means as fixed and settled as tradition will have it.
