At the turn of the century, Ragtime still had much of the aura of the saloons and "sporting houses" in which it was born, although the harmonic language used by Joplin goes beyond what one would expect of bawdy background music and, indeed, sometimes bears a striking resemblance to that of Chopin. Although a forerunner of Jazz, Ragtime is in essence a composed, rather than improvised art form. Nevertheless, a certain amount of extemporaneous ornamentation is characteristic of authentic performance practice, particularly in repeated sections. Following on this model, the arrangement found here contains much in the way of ornamentation. The tempo marking - not too fast - is Joplin's original instruction.

Au tournant du siècle, Ragtime avait encore beaucoup de l'aura des saloons et des «maisons de sportifs" dans lequel il est né, bien que le langage harmonique utilisée par Joplin va au-delà ce que l'on peut attendre d'débauche musique de fond et, en effet, parfois présente une ressemblance frappante avec celle de Chopin. Bien que précurseur de Jazz, Ragtime est par essence, une forme d'art plutôt que improvisé composé. Néanmoins, une certaine quantité d'ornementation improvisée est caractéristique de la pratique de la performance authentique, en particulier dans les sections répétées. Suite à ce modèle, l'arrangement trouvé ici contient beaucoup de la manière de l'ornementation. Le marquage tempo - pas trop vite - est instruction d'origine de Joplin.
