It is dawn at the encampment at Velletri in Italy, where Don Alvaro has enrolled under the name of Don Federico Herreros. He sings of his despairing love, at the mercy of implacable destiny. As an introduction to this aria Verdi composed a beautiful Romanza for Clarinet.
