The second volume in this series of Franz Schubert’s Complete Piano Sonatas has been carefully edited, annotated and fingered for the ABRSM by Howard Ferguson. This is part of a series of authoritative performing editions of standard keyboard works, prepared from original sources by leading scholars including informative introductions, performance notes and detailed editorial markings. Volume Two includes the four sonatas. D.575, D.664, D.784 and D.845 as well as five unfinished works and range from popular favourites to mere fragments only a few bars long. Even in the earliest of these sonatas Schubert demonstrates his compositional poeticism, sensitivity and skill in the romantic idiom. For a broad scope of emotion and feeling they are second only to Beethoven’s sonatas.
