A Wedding Bouquet was the idea of Lord Berners, who wanted Frederick Ashton to make a ballet pantomime out of one of Gertrude Stein's plays and who both wrote the music and designed the "decor" and costumes. The name of the play was 'They must be Wedded to Their Wife', but this was thought too long for advertising and was changed to A Wedding Bouquet. Lord Berners went to visit Gertrude Stein in Bilignin and she liked the idea and he found in her house a carpet which gave him the pattern for the backcloth for the ballet. The ballet was first spoken of as a choral ballet and the opera chorus did sing or chant the words at the early performances, but it was entirely unlike any other choral ballet before or since. The words explained the action, introduced the characters, made utterly irrelevant comments, worked themselves into a frenzied rhythmical accompaniment or injected on occasional apt phrase that devastated dancers and audience alike. Not all of the words have ever been really intelligible but gradually the audience got to know certain phrases by heart and the ballet has a devoted public, although inevitably it has always been a rather special one and to this day there are people who detest the whole affair, don't 'understand' it, and think it an absurd waste of time and talent.

Un bouquet de mariage était l'idée de Lord Berners, qui voulait Frederick Ashton à faire une pantomime de ballet sur une des pièces de Gertrude Stein et qui ont tous deux écrit la musique et a conçu le «décor» et costumes. Le nom de la pièce a été «Ils doivent être attachés à leur femme», mais cela a été pensé trop longtemps pour la publicité et a été remplacé par un bouquet de mariage. Lord Berners allé rendre visite à Gertrude Stein dans Bilignin et elle a aimé l'idée et il a trouvé dans sa maison un tapis qui lui a donné le modèle de la toile de fond pour le ballet. Le ballet a été parlé comme un ballet de chœur et le chœur d'opéra ne chanter ou réciter les mots au début des performances, mais il était tout à fait différent de tout autre ballet chorale avant ou depuis. Les mots ont expliqué l'action, introduit les personnages, fait des commentaires pertinents façon la plus énergique, se travaillé dans un accompagnement rythmique frénétique ou injectée sur l'expression appropriée occasionnelle qui a dévasté les danseurs et le public aussi bien. Pas tous les mots ont jamais été vraiment intelligible mais peu à peu le public fait la connaissance de certaines phrases par cœur et le ballet a un public d'inconditionnels, bien que forcément il a toujours été une assez particulière et à ce jour il ya des gens qui détestent l'ensemble affaire, ne «comprendre» pas, et pense que ce un gaspillage absurde de temps et de talent.
